The Impact of Technology on Public Relations

Just like many sectors that have been impacted by the digital revolution, the Public Relations (PR) They are not left behind. In recent years, new technologies have not only redefined the media landscape, but have also raised users' expectations for personalized experiences, as well as transformed their behavioral habits.

Who is dedicated to PR world they know that it's not always easy to explain their work. Even after several explanations, their family or friends might still not fully grasp the importance of this role within companies. In practical terms, public relations consist of putting the right information into the right hands, at the right time, and in the right way. By working with concepts and ideas as raw material, storytelling becomes a fundamental tool for carrying out a communication strategy.

To do this, a certain journalistic nose and to be able to find stories amidst oceans of information or big data, and humanize the narrative by making visible the impact of a brand on its users, who should always be at the center of the communication plan. In this way, audiences can identify with the story, thereby increasing their consideration and interest in the brand.

However, the game board is no longer the same; people can now interact in multiple spaces in parallel, even in the metaverse. While public relations originally emerged around the media industry, which held a monopoly on information and controlled agenda-setting, today, with the rise of social media, influencers, and virtual experiences, the landscape is more challenging.

It's important to understand that traditional and digital channels don't make up the entire ecosystem. Therefore, public relations teams must be creative enough to propose 360 strategies that include earned, paid, and owned media to reach audiences where they are.

This is no small challenge, because although some of the major media outlets have fallen into crisis and had to lay off staff or even leave the sector, there are new competitors who, through disruptive information formats, create specialized products for specific audiences.

Here arises another branding opportunity: co-creating special content in alliance with media outlets. In their search for alternative revenue streams, these outlets have identified this format as beneficial for them, for partner companies, and for their readers, as the content retains its journalistic and ethical focus.

As a result of the increasing supply of information sources, audiences fragment and reorganize based on preferences. This forces PR teams to do their utmost to move away from mass communications and, instead, create valuable connections with their stakeholders by starting with segmented and personalized content.

Indeed, considering that Generation Z quite adeptly combines the real world with virtual experiences, the metaverse could be the next place to generate brand conversations. However, this will only be possible to the extent that consumers grow and businesses are willing to innovate and experiment in the digital world.

Taking up the first sentence of this blog and understanding the perspective of the “New Communicator” developed by Jan Servaes, a professor at the University of Massachusetts considered one of the foremost specialists in communication for sustainable development, “Communicators must be prepared to respond to new forms of participation, based on knowledge of the communities, their culture, values, and beliefs, with the purpose of creating communication strategies in an increasingly global world.".

Thus, in an environment where the division between offline and online communication is increasingly blurred, where users have stopped being passive recipients and become content creators, public relations become more important than ever.

In this context, collaboration and co-creation, technological transformation capabilities, and audience-segmented stories will be the best tools to achieve client objectives in a hyperconnected world.
